Microsoft has made its near real-time voice translator available for everyone.
"Today, we're excited to announce that we're making it easier to obtain the Skype Translator preview by removing the sign-up requirement," Yasmin Khan from Skype's marketing team wrote in a blog entry on Tuesday (May 12, 2015).
Previously, using Skype Translator required an invitation, and so it was limited to testers. Now, anyone can download the application from the Windows app store for free. People need to note that the preview so far only works on devices running Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 Technical Preview.
Skype Translator currently supports four spoken languages: English, Spanish, Italian and Mandarin, meaning that if you video-chat with your foreign friend, there is supposed to be no language barrier as long as you speak any of these languages.
Khan says that Skype Translator also supports 50 instant messaging languages, so if you write a text message in your language, the recipient will receive it in the language he or she chooses.
Microsoft says there are over 300 million Skype users worldwide.
